Survey: Small businesses losing out on mCommerce

SMALL businesses are being left behind in the race to capture mCommerce customers, a new report suggests.

The survey, commissioned by MoPowered, found that only 24% of retailers had a site that is compatible for mCommerce.

However, 89% of small businesses believe that mCommerce was essential for capturing new business, and that it could grow by as much as a third within the next 5 years.

It would appear that many businesses are reluctant to ‘go mobile’ because of the perception of high costs, lack of resources and concerns about security, the report’s authors say.

Phillip McGriskin, chief product officer at online payments company WorldPay, says retailers should take security seriously and find a provider who can deliver a safe solution.

“Retailers should choose an mCommerce provider that takes security seriously and puts security at the heart of everything they do,” said Mr McGriskin.

“Customers should experience the same high levels of security through the mobile channel as through e-commerce, as payments systems should be fully compatible with payment card industry standards.”

One small retailer which has embraced mobile is The Tickle Company, a high quality greetings card business.

Company founder Darren Tickle, says he wanted to take advantage of mCommerce channel offered but didn’t believe his company had the time, budget or expertise to do so.

“Given the rapid adoption of smartphones, we knew we faced a massive opportunity lost by not having a mobile solution, but we didn’t know where to start in developing one and believed the cost of entry to be a major barrier,” said Mr Tickle.

“MoPowered has enabled us to gain access to a whole new and exciting channel as easily as flipping a switch. It’s the kind of easy and effective solution that I need as a small business owner.”
