Survey: Men spend more online than women

ONLINE shoppers in the UK spend an average of £3,370 a year with men appearing the most prolific shoppers, a new survey has found.

Data from the 2012 WorldPay eCommerce Basket Survey shows that 60% of internet shoppers makes purchases up to three times per month, 40% buy goods online every week, and 10% buy 10 times a month or more.

The survey, which examined the spending habits of 2000 people, found that men buy the most online spending an average of £3,495 a year, compared to £3,210 for women.

Men outspend women on electronics (£145), lifestyle and entertainment (£150) and travel (£235), whereas women spend £127 more on fashion and clothing.

“Every day we hear reports that consumer spending is under pressure, but ecommerce continues to grow at a healthy rate,” said Gabriel Hopkins, head of ecommerce products at WorldPay.

“Men are renowned for avoiding shops, but they’re enthusiastic e-shoppers.

“They typically spend the most online except in the areas of fashion and clothing where women are power shoppers, spending almost twice as much. With more people than ever buying physical and virtual goods online, it’ll be intriguing to see whether this cultural shift has an impact on the ONS basket contents and value.”

The survey also revealed that books and literature are the common purchases with 57% of those surveyed, compared to just 15% for film rentals and downloads.

Travel and holidays are also a big pull in terms of volume, the average package holiday was found to cost £1,608.
