Why are websites good sales tools?

starting a website? You may think the answer is obvious, but there are still many small businesses out there that do not use their websites for sales. Why are websites good sales tools?

By Jason Hesse

It is almost unthinkable that any small business entrepreneur would not insist on having a website for his or her business. And yet, many SMEs are still offline only. Here is why websites make good sales tools.

1. A website improves your credibility

Having a website improves your credibility. It gives you the opportunity to tell potential customers what you are about and why you deserve their custom. With an increasing number of people using the internet for researching potential purchases, having a web presence is essential.

2. It gives you a bigger market

Websites are good sales tools as they open up your addressable market. The internet has allowed businesses to break through geographical barriers and become accessible (virtually) in any country in the world by anyone with internet access. Any online user is therefore a potential customer.

3. You can promote your business better

Many small businesses make the mistake of using their website to just represent their company online. Yes, a website is a good way to give people more information about your company, but it should not only be a medium for showing your contact details.

Use your website to promote and sell your firms’ goods and services. This does not necessarily mean you need to have the latest online sales portal, but it does mean using your website as a two-way communication channel between potential customers and your sales people.

4. You now have a 24/7/365 operation

With a website, you no longer have to turn customers away when it’s time to close up shop, you no longer have to specify trading hours or shut for public holidays. Online shopping happens around the clock, day-in and day-out. A website that enables this will guarantee more sales than if you were just selling for nine hours a day.

5. Your customers have more convenience

Websites are more convenient for customers. The internet allows people to research their products online, which is much easier than them having to drive to a shop and ask a salesperson for information on a product. Potential customers have the ability to visit your website whenever they please, in the comfort of their own home, at any time of the day or night. Think of your website as a self-service medium – it’s the ultimate convenience for potential customers.

Today’s modern consumer expects you to have a website. By offering them a website, you are adding value to your offering, which gives your customers a higher level of satisfaction and, ultimately, will increase your sales.
