When you’re putting together your ecommerce website, you need to make it appear as professional as possible. What are six mistakes to avoid making?
Whether you’re building your own website or writing your own copy, it’s easy to make mistakes. What are the ones that usually slip through ecommerce websites?
1. No contact details
This is a common bugbear for customers. Not having prominent contact details can annoy customers that want to get in touch with you. It is also an important trust indicator for most: if you publish a contact telephone number and address, customers are more likely to trust you. Also include an email address for those that prefer to communicate electronically.
2. Confusing “I” and “we”
While generally it is common practice to use “we” on websites, there is nothing inherently wrong with using “I”. The key is to be consistent – don’t interchange the two. And if you decide to go with “we”, ensure you have an “our team” page, rather than just featuring yourself.
3. No testimonials
Testimonials are a good way for you to convince potential customers why they should buy from your ecommerce site. The testimonials shouldn’t be made up, however: it’s easy to spot and instantly destroys your credibility. Get customers to talk about how happy they were with your service: are there any instances where you’ve gone above and beyond? Ask them about how happy they’ve been with your products.
4. No mailing list sign-up box
Again, you need to make it as easy as possible for customers to sign up to your mailing list. Mailing lists are a great marketing tool, allowing you to keep in touch with your customers. Not having a very easy way for your website users to sign up to your mailing list is a sin! A good way to incentivise users to sign up to your mailing list is to offer them a discount on their next purchase.
5. Too much text
With ecommerce websites, the majority of your visitors will just want to browse your products to start. Don’t make the mistake of having too much text on every page. It’s fine (and in fact is beneficial) to describe your products, but don’t write an essay about each one. Keep your text succinct and interesting.
6. Unprofessional photos (or no photos at all)
Another huge mistake is for ecommerce sites to not have professional photography. Product photos do most of the selling, so ensure you only use high-quality, professional photos that will appeal to your customers.
