Twitter is becoming the social media channel of choice for driving interaction numbers amongst consumers. Whether this leads to direct business or not is harder to quantify, but getting people following you is a great first step to getting your initial free marketing going.
So how do you go about getting your first 1000 Twitter users?

Make you user name relevant
Pick a user name that says or clearly implies what you and your company does. Don’t muck about with being cryptic or generic, try and stand out. Ideally use your real name or include your real name to make it human and personal.
Use a picture
Use a photo of yourself to give your brand a human face. This is twitter: no one is looking for cool logos, they want to be talking to a person. So use your face as the public Twitter face of your company.
Have an informative linked bio
You have space for a short bio, so use it effectively. Say clearly what you do and ideally why what you do is useful. And include a link to your website
Follow people
Sounds obvious, but you need to follow as many people as possible. Follow 1000 people and you’ll probably get 250 back. But to find the right people you need to search through twitter by keywords looking for the kinds of people that you want to follow you.
It’s laborious, but you only need do it once in a big push at the start and only then every month or so on an on going basis to keep the numbers up.
Auto DM new followers
When someone follows you back, automatically direct message them back to thank them for following you. This is polite but it is also the perfect opportunity to list to them all the sites you want them to look at.
Retweet them
Once you have a good list of followers, retweet their tweets like mad. Your followers will be grateful and you will slowly then build more followers.
Get rid of non-followers
Regularly have a clear out of any one you have followed who isn’t following you back. You want to get 1000 followers who are useful to you, not 1000 people who ignore you. Use tweepi to unfollow those that aren’t following you on a regular basis.
Constantly tweet
The key to using Twitter is to keep using it: every 15 minutes or so to be precise. The more frequently you use it, the more people are likely to find you and follow you.
But keep it interesting
While its great to tweet all the time to keep things fresh and active, don’t be self agrandising and keep it interesting. Constantly tweeting your triumphs and how awesome you think you (or what you do or are doing) is, its pretty boring for everyone else.
Also keep it interesting and informative: share interesting links to relevant content for your professional followers. Believe me, no one gives a monkey’s about what you are having for lunch or what fancy restaurant you are having it in. They also don’t need to know when you go to the toilet.
Track your results
You have to understand on an ongoing basis how its going and actively remove people. TwitterCounter will show you how many new users you’re adding per day and Qwitter will email you when someone unfollows you after a tweet.
