mobile marketing

Marketing for mobiles is a whole different ball game

Reaching out to mobile consumers is a whole new ball game for online marketers. Read on for a fresh perspective on spreading the word about your business.

In this article you’ll find out that mobile website marketing is a bit different to standard website marketing and we’ll give you five ways to help you get your mobile website noticed.

As a successful ecommerce professional, you’ll already know how important it is to make your site findable, seductive and easy to use as well as making sure your product range and prices are pretty much impossible to resist.

When it comes to mobile commerce, while some of your tried and tested techniques will serve you in great stead, there’s no getting away from the fact that you’re going to have to adopt a whole new mind-set to reach out to and convert your potential mobile buyers.

Mobile consumers behave differently to desk or laptop consumers, seeking a quicker fix and insisting on an even more streamlined buying experience.

This is all good and well, but when you’re aiming to get your product range displayed on a device smaller than your hand, this poses sometimes pretty extreme design, as well as findability challenges.

So, assuming you already have your mobile commerce design ducks in a row, what can you do to promote your site?

1.    Target Toplists.  Toplists are effectively the Yellow Pages of mobile websites, the difference being that you can’t just buy your slot; you need to earn your position.  To earn your position on a Toplist, you need to send traffic from your site to your chosen Toplist.

Make sure you’re choosy though, because there’s no point in focusing your efforts on sending traffic to a Toplist to climb its ranking for your chosen search terms unless it has enough traffic in its own right to reach out to a sufficient number of your potential buyers.

2.    Good old SEO.  While many of the standard SEO techniques you use on your main site will stand you in good stead when it comes to mobile SEO, Google have made it clear that they’re planning to apply a unique set of rules to mobile websites.

Like most things Google right now, this one’s a bit of a waiting game to see what comes out tops but there are already a few champions who’re making their views known online.

A Top Tip here would be to find someone who has a good track record and whose style you like and then pick from their tips selectively.

3.    Old fashioned promotion.  The problem when it comes to technology is that too many people forget that the good old tried and tested methods of promotion still have their place alongside your hi-tech efforts.

Basic things like promoting your mobile commerce site on your ecommerce site makes complete sense, as does encouraging people to share and bookmark your URL.

Thereafter, extend your basic site promotion to brochures, business cards and across your range of business stationery and you’ll soon start to gather a following.  If you’re engaging in traditional advertising, it’s essential that you include reference to your mobile commerce site there too.

4.    Selectively build links.  While link building has had a tough time of late, there’s no getting away from the fact that selective link building still has its place in promoting both your ecommerce and your mobile commerce websites.

5.    Mobile ads.  Just like PPC, there’s a growing list of paid mobile search options.  Although relatively speaking in its infancy, there’s great reason to get your head around this option so you’re in a good place when it really takes off.

Probably more effective than paid mobile search options right now though are the paid ad networks that, for the moment at least, appear to be representing particularly good value for money, especially in niche markets.
