Websites are defined by their content and the better it is the greater the chance you’ll get visited and make sales. Here’s a quick guide to getting it right
1) Keep it simple
Most visitors won’t read everything on your page, in fact, many will only be there for a very short period of time. Web users find most pages via search or social media, they click, and if the page doesn’t deliver they click away. So it is essential you create a clear and simple message which finds the right people and brings them to you. These people are the ones who are more likely to hang around and eventually buy.
2) Brainstorm
Bring your team together and fill sheets of paper with ideas and then categorise them into topics. Think about your users and make it as bright and interesting for them as you can. Don’t just aim to fill up space, aim for quality not quantity.
3) Good spelling
Spelling is important as it provides a website with credibility. Increasingly, research shows that users are less likely to buy if they spot a spelling mistake on a page. Buyers are already concerned with issues such as fraud and security and when they spot something which looks unprofessional alarm bells start ringing. Staff with good literacy skills are a must and proof-reading content before it goes live is a job worth doing.
4) Think social media
Social media has added a whole new dimension to content creation for websites, as it means your posts and pages can appear all over the web. It has the potential to magnify the power of your work and really good content, as well as really bad, has the power to go viral. Look for ways for users to interact with your content and aim to get them to repost and retweet it where possible. Again the emphasis must be on interesting and exciting content, or something which is deemed to be useful.
5) Think mobile
Increasingly people are accessing the web via handsets and tablets rather than PCs. This has massive implications for content makers and eCommerce companies. You should regularly access your website via a mobile to see how it feels to be a consumer on the move. Is your content easy to read? Can you navigate and find things on your site easily? These are all key questions when creating content for your eCommerce site.
6) SEO
Content which is well optimised for search will invariably fare better than content which pays no regard to such matters. Understand which search terms your customers are using and ensure you have content optimised for those key words. Keep it simple and don’t overdo it. If you are selling trainers and sportswear then make sure these words appear in your content. However, don’t spam as Google and other search engines take a dim view of the black arts of SEO.
7) Be regular
Sites which regular create new content are more regularly indexed by search engines and gain more traffic. Ensure you are creating new content on a regular basis to keep your site fresh, interesting and well visited.
